Thursday, April 16 - The History of Folk Horror
Explore the dark origins of folk horror and its connections to ancient customs, folklore and modern anxieties. Followed by Q&A. Why are we so fascinated by old stories, strange traditions, and the idea that the past might still be hiding in the present? Folk horror often takes us to remote villages, wild landscapes and forgotten beliefs – places where ancient customs and superstition feel very real. The genre has seen a big comeback in recent years, with new films, TV and books building on classic folk horror from the 1960s and 70s, including The Wicker Man, Witchfinder General and The Blood on Satan's Claw. These stories were inspired by older Gothic and supernatural writing, including the work of Algernon Blackwood, which drew heavily on folklore and real historical beliefs. Join Dr Sam Le Butt as we explore how folk horror blends history, myth and imagination – and ask: where does folklore end and reality begin? Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7:30 - come down early to grab a good seat!

Monday, April 20 - CSM Swap Shop x ReCreate UK
This year at Earth Week, we'll be joined by Mel Appleby founder of ReCreate UK, an organisation which reclaims tons of what would be exhibition waste and extends the life of these materials by donating them to other causes, including CSM Swap Shop. Through this session, participants will learn about the exhibition waste problem, as well as how to tackle it through responsible design approaches. Mel will also present case studies of how former exhibition materials have had new life in other creative projects and outputs. After learning from Mel, we'll move to our Paint/Surface workshop to learn how to stretch and create our own canvases using reclaimed exhibition materials. This workshop embodies the CSM Swap Shop’s mission for UAL to use reclaimed materials for creative practice, tackling the waste problem in the arts and cultural sector. It is open to all students and staff at UAL, and will take place in person at Central Saint Martins.
Tuesday, April 21 - Regent’s Park After Dark: Bats
Step into The Regent’s Park at dusk and witness London's nocturnal life awaken, from hunting bats to hidden habitats. As daylight fades and the park quietens, a hidden world begins to stir. Join us for this atmospheric walk that blends wildlife spotting with ecology, conservation and a deeper understanding of how urban parks can thrive after dark.
You’ll discover how the park transforms after hours and why it plays such an important role for London’s nocturnal wildlife.
Using bat detectors, you’ll tune into the ultrasonic calls of different bat species as they hunt overhead, learning how scientists identify bats by sound and behaviour.
This walk also explores the wider cast of nocturnal species that share the park and the intricate web of habitats that supports them once the sun goes down.
Learn how The Regent’s Park is being managed and enhanced to support wildlife at night, from planting and water features to dark corridors and shelter.
