On this Art Deco-era appreciation tour we'll look at how the statement buildings of the 1920s and 1930s altered the Victorian streets of Camden. We’ll look at shops and businesses along the High Street as well as factories, offices and residential properties in the back streets. Hear about one of the UK's biggest wine distributors, see where moving pictures were made and shown, and where The Beatles' boots were created. We'll also look at some buildings that have recently closed and others that have been repurposed or revamped. We'll end our walk at the Black Cat factory, a marvellous temple to manufacture that made it through WWII almost unscathed but suffered during subsequent decades, later rejuvenated to what we see today. Hear the story behind the company who built this "hygienic wonder factory" as you admire the excellent Egyptian details. Please don't worry about the Camden market crowds – the route is designed so that there is only one instance when we'll have to cut through them!

  • This July, step into the elegant squares and quiet terraces of Bloomsbury — and discover just how gloriously queer they have always been.

  • We begin outside Housmans Bookshop, the radical King’s Cross bookshop that housed the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard in the 1970s. From this hub of activism and community organising, we journey into Bloomsbury’s Georgian walkways and garden squares to uncover stories that were whispered, coded, censored — and sometimes defiantly lived in plain sight.

  • Behind these calm façades were passionate love affairs, unconventional households, political rebellion and groundbreaking medical pioneers.

  • Join us for a free nature walk and creative workshop!

  • We’ll start with a gentle stroll through the local area, noticing the plants, hidden corners, and everyday nature around us. Along the way, we’ll collect and share stories and observations that show how local changes connect to the wider world.

  • Back at the library, experiment with sun printing and printmaking. Together, we’ll turn these discoveries into a shared Camden map, connecting your creativity and the stories you’ve gathered to the bigger picture of nature and climate. This part of the session is drop-in, so you can stay as long as you like.

One of those parades will lead to the Amphitheatre, Stables Market, where a Dhol Drumming Workshop* will take place.

  • Inspired by the permaculture principles of re-use and zero waste, join artist Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck to learn the basics of natural dyes and reveal a palette of colours from plant-based kitchen waste, such as onion and garlic skins, tea, carrot peel and avocado pits. This workshop is directly inspired by the method Johanna employs in her series of collaborative installations, ‘Penser, Manger, Partager’ (‘To Think, To Eat’ To Share’, 2015 – Present). Johanna will also share her experience growing and foraging plants responsibly.

  • It is an entry-level adult-only workshop, and no prior experience is required. The method can be repeated at home, with no additional material purchased other than what is found on most kitchen shelves.
